BCBS Massachusetts

The state's broadly recognized fully insured carrier — our lead option for most Southeastern MA employers, with an important 2027 plan-type change to know about.

Network & Access

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) is the state's largest and most broadly recognized fully insured carrier.
  • BlueCard access for nationwide coverage when employees travel or relocate.
  • Wide baseline access across Massachusetts hospital systems, including those serving Plymouth and Bristol County.

Member Tools

  • An online member portal for claims, ID cards, and plan documents.
  • Confidential digital mental health programs are common in BCBS plans nationally; ask your advisor which are included in your specific plan.
  • Fully insured means a fixed, predictable premium set by the carrier — no employer claims exposure.

Important: BCBSMA is discontinuing PPO and EPO plans in the merged market

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts will discontinue all PPO and EPO plans in the merged market (the combined individual and small-group markets) after 2026. A separate industry source states the change takes effect at renewal beginning January 1, 2027, for groups with 1–50 full-time employees, who will need to transition to an HMO or other available plan type. If your group currently carries a BCBSMA PPO or EPO plan, verify your specific renewal terms directly with BCBS Massachusetts or your advisor — see our full Network Disruption Guide for complete detail.

BCBS Massachusetts is one option among several — and it filed the largest merged-market renewing enrollee base in the state's 2027 rate filings, discussed in full on our Rate Trends & Market Reality page. We do not promise savings by choosing any single carrier; the right fit depends on your group's specific situation.
