Boston vs. Local Care

Southeastern Massachusetts has strong local hospital systems — and real, existing bridges into Boston's academic medical centers when specialty care calls for it.

The Default

Local care is right for most of what employees need

Primary care, routine specialty visits, most surgeries, maternity care, behavioral health, and urgent/emergency care are all well handled by the local systems covered on our Where to Go for Care and Who Are the Players pages — South Shore Health, BID Plymouth, Signature Healthcare/Brockton Hospital, Southcoast Health, and Sturdy Health. Staying local usually means shorter travel time, easier follow-up scheduling, and a care team familiar with the patient over time.

When Boston Makes Sense

Complex or highly specialized cases

For rare diagnoses, complex cancer care, advanced cardiac or transplant needs, and certain pediatric subspecialties, a referral into one of Boston's academic medical centers is often the right call:

Massachusetts General Hospital

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Boston Children's Hospital

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Tufts Medical Center

Boston Medical Center

The Good News

Local systems already have real bridges into Boston

For many employees, "local vs. Boston" isn't actually an either/or decision — Southeastern MA's own hospital systems maintain direct clinical affiliations that bring Boston-level specialty care closer to home:

South Shore Health ↔ Dana-Farber / Brigham / Boston Children's

South Shore Health has real, current clinical affiliations with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Boston Children's Hospital — confirmed directly on South Shore Health's own site. That means certain cancer, complex adult, and pediatric specialty services can be accessed with a South Shore Health connection rather than a cold referral into Boston.

Sturdy Health ↔ Brigham and Women's Radiation Oncology

Sturdy Health (Attleboro) partners with Brigham and Women's on the Brigham and Women's/Sturdy Health Radiation Oncology Center, located at 89 Forbes Boulevard, Mansfield — bringing Brigham-affiliated radiation oncology to a Bristol County-adjacent location instead of requiring a full trip into Boston.
