It's easy to assume that the hospitals and physician groups in your plan's network today will still be there next renewal. In Southeastern Massachusetts over the past two years, that assumption has failed more than once: a major hospital bankruptcy changed hospital ownership across three facilities, and the state's largest carrier is discontinuing entire plan types. BCBS Massachusetts is discontinuing PPO and EPO plans in the merged market
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts will discontinue all PPO and EPO plans in the merged market (the combined individual and small-group markets) after 2026. Reporting citing BCBSMA directly confirms this. A separate industry source states the change takes effect at renewal beginning January 1, 2027, for groups with 1–50 full-time employees, who will need to transition to an HMO or other available plan type.
This is a real, current, significant product and network change. If your group currently carries a BCBSMA PPO or EPO plan and falls in the merged market (roughly 1–50 full-time employees), your 2027 renewal options will look different than your 2026 plan — not because of a rate change, but because the plan type itself is going away.

Steward Health Care's 2024 bankruptcy directly changed hospital ownership across Plymouth and Bristol County. Here is exactly what happened and when.
Good Samaritan Medical Center, Brockton → BMC South
Boston Medical Center Health System assumed operations of Good Samaritan Medical Center (Brockton) and St. Elizabeth's Medical Center (Brighton) from bankrupt Steward Health Care on October 1, 2024. On May 1, 2025, Good Samaritan was renamed Boston Medical Center – South (BMC South); St. Elizabeth's became BMC Brighton.
Saint Anne's & Morton Hospitals → Brown University Health
Saint Anne's Hospital (Fall River) and Morton Hospital (Taunton) also transitioned out of Steward on October 1, 2024, joining Brown University Health (formerly Lifespan), the Providence, RI-based system.

What to verify before your next renewal
Network status is not a "set it and forget it" fact in this market right now. Before renewal, walk through this list with your advisor:
Facility
Confirm the specific hospital or clinic your employees use is still in-network under the exact ownership structure it operates under today — not the name it had two years ago.
Physician Group
A facility changing ownership can mean the physician group contracted to it changes too. Confirm the actual treating physician, not just the building, is in-network.
Billing Entity
Ownership transitions sometimes change which legal entity bills for services — confirm claims will process correctly under the current billing structure.
Behavioral Health Network

Pharmacy / PBM
Confirm your pharmacy benefit manager and preferred pharmacy network haven't shifted as part of any plan-type change, including the BCBSMA PPO/EPO discontinuation above.
